On 19 Apr 1864, Richard Smith was appointed guardian of James Beverly Guernsey (Lovina Guernsey’s half-brother) by the Court of Probate held at Haverhill, Grafton, NH, USA.

He is reputed to be the first Catholic Representative in the state of New Hampshire serving in 1869 as a Democrat.
